Takapuna

_

The landscape of this beachside home was influenced by the clients love of a resilient coastal palette as well as selecting plant species which are drought and salt tolerant.

The garden's location set back from the Takapuna beachfront exposes it to harsh salt spray and coastal winds. Pōhutukawa x rata and large olives were selected as specimen trees capable of thriving. The lush Ficus tuffi hedging provides the front garden with a defined structure and gives ample screening from the street.

Textural species such as Mexican grass trees (Dasylirion longissimum) and Westringia fruticosa ‘Grey Box’ fill the entrance form while providing contrast to the muted tones of the olive trees. Grasses and native groundcovers meander through the entrance planting and around the house softening edges and carpeting garden beds.

The garden courtyard extends from the lounge and opens up to a terrace densely planted in native shrubs, flowering perennials, and groundcovers which cascade over the courtyard walls. Pots are filled with citrus and herbs and compliment the terraces lush, glossy palette.
